Delhi Airport Automated People Mover (APM)

Project description

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is the largest airport in India. To meet growing demand, an expansion project is underway to increase the airport’s required infrastructure capacity.

The T1 and T3/T4 terminal complexes are far apart – about 3 km in linear distance and about 7 km along existing roads. Currently, a shuttle bus operates between terminals T1 and T3/T4. In order to increase passenger comfort, reduce travel times between terminals and to be able to serve future passenger demand, a landside passenger transportation system is planned as an interterminal system connecting the different terminals – International (T3), Domestic (T1 and T4) and Cargo Terminal – with the “Aerocity” business district complex in between.

The fine distribution of public transport in the “Aerocity” business district by means of smart, ground-based means of transport and the connection to the existing metro network were also part of this transportation study.

Service description

The following topics were addressed:

  • Service level requirements and station positioning
  • Creation and assessment of various alignment options
  • Design of site plans and longitudinal sections
  • Technology analyses and comparisons
  • Listing of potential system vendors including airport case studies
  • Preparation of a technology evaluation matrix using various evaluation criteria tailored to IGIA requirements and definition of exclusion criteria
  • Preselection of possible transportation technologies
  • Examination of system operation simulations and calculations
  • Definition of applicable codes & standards for desired transport system
  • Definition of system performance requirements and Request For Information (RFI) documents
  • Preliminary guideway, station and maintenance facility planning
  • Estimation of investment and O&M costs for preselected transport technologies
  • Virtual site visits of transportation systems in real operation with preselected vendors
  • Final technology assessment and recommendation
